Outside of the world of Building Information Modeling (BIM), words like collaboration and coordination are often used interchangeably, but not so in a BIM context.
What is BIM Coordination?
BIM Coordination is a contractual relationship between a provider and a client. The BIM manager requires the services of a specialist – for example, a general contractor specializing in plumbing – and works out the schedules and deliverables needed from the provider.
BIM managers will have numerous providers to coordinate, sometimes requiring two or more interfaces to solve a particular issue in design or in the field.

What is BIM Collaboration?
BIM Collaboration occurs when two or more stakeholders are able to offer assistance on an issue, but the nature of the relationship is spontaneous. This can include training, sharing of certain proprietary information, or working together as a team for the betterment of the project (rather than financial restitution).
In Summary, What is the difference between BIM coordination and BIM collaboration?
BIM Coordination is about putting the plan together in design and execution, while collaboration is about getting the best of each player.
